PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Braided Belt is the most structurally different belt in the HoldForm range. The strap is not a solid piece of leather — it is a handwoven braid of vegetable-tanned cowhide strips. The buckle pin slides through any section of the braid rather than into punched holes, giving fully adjustable positioning without fixed steps or a ratchet mechanism.

Vegetable tanning is a traditional tanning process that uses plant-based tannins rather than chromium chemicals. Vegetable-tanned leather is firmer when new, softens with wear, and develops a genuine patina — the surface darkens and deepens at wear and handling points over months and years of use. It is a slower, more expensive process than chrome tanning, which produces most commercial leather goods.

The braided construction is more flexible and breathable than a solid strap — the woven structure allows slight movement with the body rather than sitting as a rigid band. This makes it more comfortable in warm weather and for extended daily wear.

At 25mm this is the narrowest belt in the HoldForm range. It is a casual summer belt — correct for chinos, linen trousers, light denim, and relaxed casual outfits. It is not a formal belt and does not suit heavy denim or workwear contexts.

THE VEGETABLE-TANNING DIFFERENCE

Most commercial leather uses chrome tanning — a fast chemical process that produces a consistent, stable, slightly soft leather. Chrome-tanned leather is the standard for most belts, bags, and shoes.

Vegetable tanning uses plant-based tannins in a slower process. The result: firmer leather when new, more pronounced natural variation in the grain, and genuine patina development over time. Vegetable-tanned leather ages distinctively — the surface deepens in tone and develops a character specific to how that belt was worn and handled.

The braided construction distributes the patina development across the woven surfaces — each strip ages slightly differently depending on its position in the braid and its exposure to handling and light.

THE NO-HOLE ADJUSTMENT

The buckle pin slides through any gap in the woven braid rather than into punched holes. This provides:

Infinite positioning: No fixed 25mm gaps between holes, no ratchet steps. The belt sits at the exact tension that feels right.

No hole stretch: Punched holes are a stress concentration point — the leather around them elongates under repeated daily loading. The braid distributes load across the full woven structure.

Natural flex: After meals, during long wear, or when seated, the braid accommodates slight changes in waist circumference without requiring deliberate adjustment.

This mechanism is different from both pin-buckle and ratchet systems — it is closer to how traditional braided leather belts have functioned for decades.

SIZE AND FIT

The Braided Belt is 103.5cm total length — this is a fixed strap, not trim-to-fit. The pin can engage at any point across the braid, which means the effective wearing range spans a wider set of waist sizes than a fixed-hole belt at the same length.

Suitable waist range: approximately 70–90cm (27–35″). The braid starts after a solid leather section at the buckle end — measure where the braid begins to the tip to confirm the adjustable range.

STYLE CONTEXT

25mm is a slim casual width — the correct specification for:

• Chinos and slim-cut casual trousers
• Light denim and summer denim
• Linen trousers
• Casual shirts and relaxed outfits

It is not the correct width for formal suit loops (where 30–35mm is standard) or for heavy workwear denim (where 38mm+ is correct). The woven construction and casual aesthetic make its context clear — this is a warm-weather casual belt, not a formal or heavy-duty one.

Best footwear pairings: loafers, clean sneakers, boat shoes, casual leather shoes. Not suited for heavy boots or formal shoes.

CARE

Vegetable-tanned leather requires slightly different care than chrome-tanned leather:

Apply a natural leather conditioner — beeswax-based or lanolin-based products work particularly well with vegetable-tanned leather and support the patina development rather than inhibiting it. Avoid silicone-based conditioners.

Wipe with a dry cloth after wear. Air dry if wet — do not apply heat. Store hung vertically. The leather will darken naturally over time as the patina develops.

How does the adjustment work without holes? The buckle pin slides through any gap in the woven braid. The braid structure grips the pin across the full width of the strap rather than at a single punched hole. To adjust: release the pin, slide the strap to the correct tension, and the pin re-engages into the braid.
